Biography

Simon Burt first pursued his passion for photography in 1987, after ten years travelling the world with the Royal Marines. He was employed as a freelance photojournalist for regional daily newspapers based in Plymouth, and also began to secure larger corporate clients, such as Wrigley’s.

In 1993 Simon was offered a full-time post as a staff photographer at the Western Morning News where he was later promoted to Deputy Picture Editor. In 1997 he became the Cornish representative for Apex Photo Agency and relocated his family to Truro.

Simon won the ‘Canon Photojournalist of the Year 2002’ in the British Environment & Media Awards for his image taken while covering a protest against GM crops in Dorset. The prize was awarded in recognition of ‘the best coverage of environmental issues by a photojournalist’. The image depicts a man dressed in black wearing a white skeleton mask, and is framed by the green leaves of GM-grown maize. He holds a scythe in his hand, and the sign that hangs from the blade reads ‘The GriM reaper’. This image was published on the front cover of the Independent the following morning and has been widely used nationally and internationally.

Since 2004 Simon has established a successful freelance career and developed a loyal corporate client base, such as the Jamie Oliver inspired restaurant, Fifteen (Cornwall and London), BBC Radio Cornwall, BT, Exeter Airport, Air Southwest, British International, St Austell Brewery, Fugro-Seacore and Exeter University, as well as Cornish design, PR and marketing agencies – and many others.

Since 2007 Simon has challenged the concept of traditional wedding photography, providing couples with exciting, imaginative and inspirational images of high quality while maintaining affordability.
